Does speaking in front of a group of people send shivers down your spine? If it does, you’re not alone. The number one fear that people have in speaking front of a crowd. This fear prevents people from reaching their potential says Natalie Sisson of The Suitcase Entrepreneur in an article in Forbes. If you can overcome this fear, your potential is unlimited.
As a professional, you are going to meet people and it’s vital that you speak well one-on-one, in groups and in front of a number of people. I learned long ago that everyone would sell one of three things in life, if not all three. They are a product, a service or themselves.
How are we going to be successful if we don’t speak well? There are numerous ways to get over the fear of speaking in front of crowds and learning to speak well in front of people. One of those ways is to join Toastmasters. Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of meeting locations.
I recently joined a local chapter of Toastmasters and I feel it’s a wonderful organization. I am improving my extemporaneous speaking skills and proper techniques of public speaking. The members are very supportive.
Another one of the most important skills everyone needs to learn is to network. Networking can be as simple as meeting people at a social gathering. It’s important that you know how to make good impression at a social event. This one of the many speaking skills you will learn from Toastmasters. Below are a few suggestions to make a good a impression at a social event:
- Plan your topics. Think of a couple topics you can discuss with anyone
- Spark a conversation. Ask open-ended questions about the person you’re getting to know
- Listen attentively. Ask follow up questions about the person or group you are conversing with. Listen more than you talk.
